Secrets to Maintain Your Landscaping Year After Year (And Make Your Neighbors Jealous)

Landscaping Fire Pit

Stone Fire pit with paver patio hardscape for backyard landscape.

We’ve all been there: You’re looking out at your backyard, coffee in hand, thinking back to the glory days of brand new sod, perfectly manicured shrubs, and pruned flowers. If your yard has become overgrown, or is in need of a pick-me-up, here are a few pro tips to revive your landscaping and make all your neighbors jealous (once again)!

Here’s How

1. Out with the Old (leaves and branches, that is… Your in-laws can stay)

As soon as you start seeing the first signs of Spring, set aside some weekend time to remove all those broken/dried branches, prune your shrubs and trees, and rake up fallen leaves to make way for new growth. Keep it tidy!

2. Walk the Yard

During colder months, you may use your backyard less, but you’ll still want to an eye out for aggressive weeds. Walk your yard occasionally and keep an eye out for ground ivy, horse-weed, crabgrass, white clover, and other weeds… Any of those invasive plants could take a serious toll on your landscaping. Keeping up on pulling weeds can become tiresome, but there are several preventative measures that we can help you implement (contact us). Don’t skip fertilization in the Spring and avoid over watering your yard.

3. Mow Mowing, Mow Problems

Typically, keeping your lawn mowed is a sign that you’re doing things right. However, the secret is to mow your lawn when the grass level reaches 2 to 3 inches tall – so make sure you allow enough time in between mows. If you mow it too soon, your lawn won’t have time to recover, and if you mow it too late, the roots will be a problem.

4. Inspect Your Insects

Your backyard is the home of a lot of insects, some are bad, but others are good. To help your yard flourish, you want to encourage pollinators like butterflies and bees, and helpful ladybugs. So the next time you mulch, handle with care!
These easy tips will help you stay on top of landscaping maintenance, year after year. Little fixes and care here and there can go a long way!
